When they came together as a blended family, Zoe, Kym and their children Angus (7) and Jasmine (8) needed a home that could accommodate their new lifestyle and provide the space and flexibility they needed to grow as a family unit.
Having already made the decision to build a ready-made family together, building a brand new home was the obvious answer for Zoe Burnett and Kym Barlow.
“We decided to build to get exactly what we wanted, and also because it’s brand new,” said Zoe.

Zoe had built a property once before, but Kym the carpenter had never built his own home. Recalling the experience from the comfort of their beautiful new home he said, “I loved it. I knew many of the trades because I work in the industry, so that was great. And Fairmont were very accommodating about the upgrades we wanted that weren’t part of a standard upgrade.”
With comfort and functional space in mind, Kym and Zoe chose the four bedroom Grand Design Fairmont home and added a study to the floorplan so that Zoe had somewhere to work from home in her corporate role. She’s so pleased they were able to create the ideal work-from-home space.
“It’s close to the front door for receiving deliveries, and it is a functional space with built-in cabinetry that I can close off from the rest of the house if I need to.”
With two young kids to raise, their design focus was also on lifestyle. They opted for a home with three living areas – a formal lounge, an open plan family meals area with an alfresco connection, and a plush home theatre for fun family movie nights at home. It was a big project but they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
“Start to finish, it was a really good experience overall. The construction phase was brilliant; so was Emma our Sales Consultant who was very thorough. She gave us ideas and we talked about different designs. We worked with Kirby for our selections, who was energetic and excited to bring our visions to life. Tom was our Site Supervisior. Tom was fantastic, he’s very skilled, approachable and knowledgeable about the build.”
From the type of flooring to the style of the light switches, there are many decisions to make when building a home. It’s easy to put a lot of focus on important selections such as benchtops and bathrooms, floors and doors, but often it ends up being the small things that have a big impact. Which is what happened for Zoe.
Zoe says her most favourite thing about the entire home is the coffee machine. Yes, her favourite feature is an integrated Fisher & Paykel coffee machine which Fairmont ensured was incorporated into a cabinetry design that would integrate it seamlessly into their beautiful kitchen.
“I just love it! And what makes it even better is that Kym uses it to make great coffee for me,” laughs Zoe.
Kym found it harder to pick just one thing about that home that is his favourite. In the end his answer was simple. “Everything,” he said.
